About the Course

Course Description

Introduction to art, architecture, interior design, and clothing history, including social and economic factors that influenced development. Through research and critical thinking, students demonstrate knowledge of historical and contemporary art movements, architecture, and clothing for application in theatrical design.

 

Acting as exhibit curators, the students have created and contributed material to this site based on their class readings and projects. Materials include images, videos, reflections, and analyses.  See the page About the Course for more information about course objectives and learning outcomes.

 

Objectives

  1. Synthesize research and knowledge learned about global material cultures for its significance, potential application, and understanding of its relationship to the time/culture in which it was created.
  2. Facilitate and contribute to a discussion around a material culture different from their own or new to them.
  3. Review evidence and hypothesize how an object’s impact might be changed by re-contextualizing for use in a design.
  4. Synthesize research and knowledge learned about material cultures and apply that within a design process in order to devise a culturally competent historical world for the stage.

Annotated Image Example

Student have used digital tools like Thinglink to annotate images they found. Annotations might include relevant search terms, book, articles, videos, related images, and websites.
